Sat 1st July 1st Xl v Leeds Police at home League Cup - Part 1 The next four games were all a part of the League Cup competition, where the Divisions were split into two sections with the first two in each section playing off in semi-finals. Looking at the two sections we had found ourselves up against the top of the League whilst all the teams that we had beaten were in the other section! Anyway, the various 'constables', 'sergeants' and 'inspectors' of the Police cricket team arrived and once more smote the ball to far flung corners of the village. Their total of 251 including 34 fours and 6 sixes with only Piggsy avoiding any serious damage amongst the Tong bowlers. It is pleasing to report that our batting on this second visit of the Police (no Sting was not performing) did improve to some extent. The early loss of Lacky in the second over for his second club duck (only one more needed for a tie!) put the breaks on any initial run chase, and by the time that the second wicket fell with score on 57 (young Shack being given out LBW for 26) twenty-one overs had been used up. What has become a customary middle order collapse followed with Reg going for a hard worked 37, and then both Piggsy (4) and Herman (1) following quickly. Buttocks (47) though found some form for the first time in the season, and he and the batting 'find' of the season George (35) took the score to a more respectable total. |
