'Bad Head Day' No Good For Cricket
Now this game was brought forward from Bank Holiday Monday because it was thought that nobody would want to play then, so what do we do, we rearrange it for the day after the BBQ! For those in the team who had not partaken of the previous evening, the results of the excesses could easily be seen in the bodies of Horner, Chris, Pat etc. Pat in particular must have been playing on memory, having spent the previous 'night' sleeping in the tent! It is doubtful if he and Nick got any sleep though as it was well past dawn when they eventually took the horizontal position.
Batting first on a dusty Fairburn wicket, none of the Tongan batsmen looked to cause the scorers trouble. Only Horners (by now collapsing) and the in-form Mark Muckley getting into the twenty's. The arrival of tea also saw one or two more Tongites surfacing from the previous night. It is not certain if this was in support of the Tong team or the cheap beer at the Wagon & Horses (well worth the trip!) Lacking a regular keeper skipper Chris had donned the gloves which left Horners free to bowl! Unfortunately, by the time he was brought on Dave was having trouble co-ordinating his body and like the rest of the bowling was despatched to the boundary. The single wicket fell to Duncan, though he would have had a second had he not bowled Bill Lamb with a no-ball. Horners was replaced by young James Dey, but he couldn't find the form of previous games, and Pat was finally re-awoken to return to the fray. The Fairburn win came nicely in line with the 7 o'clock rule and all gathered were able to wander down to the W & H for more refreshment
