Saturday
6th May ~ Tong v Notton
An Expensive
Drop!
Had the weather forecasters got it wrong! Rain by 5pm they said but glorious
sunshine greeted us at the 2.00pm start.
Butts did it again 100% record in tossing the coin this season won 0
lost 2. Again we field first, James Mullaney bowled with real hostility
but with absolutely no luck at all. Phill opening at the field end looked
shattered after ball one as usual but managed to get to 10 overs. After
last week we thought our fielding could not get any worse, we were wrong!
Dropping Nottons opening batsman on 20 odd only for him to bat 44 overs
for 128 not out was in hindsight quite an expensive mistake. On the positive
side the fines are racking up at a tremendous rate its going to be one
hell of an end of season do. Notton end up 239 5 probably 40 more
than we should have let them get. 4 dropped catches and a few misfields
Champagne moment has to be Duncans dropped catch (ask him about it)
Tea, kindly presented this week by Nick Sowerby, an interesting array
of Indian Samosas Bajis and cheese butties. Im sure it will catch
on! And then the weather forecasters got it right. A steady drizzle set
in to start the Tong innings turning an already interesting Tong pitch
into an unplayable tong pitch. Shaun out for 0, sorry Shaun cant blame
the pitch for yours, Butts gets bowled with a ball that hits 4 inches
from the base of the stump but pitches half way down, Débutante
Derek looked like he was going to set the world on fire with the hardest
and sweetest timed square cut ever to grace the ground. And then another
shooter. Whilst all this is going on Kadar is impatiently smashing the
ball to all parts and making the rest of the top order look very silly.
Nick fell next far too tired from making teas to be able to bat. Adam
gave good support to Kad until Kad was dubiously given out on 74 team
score about 95. Another good partnership then between Adam and Jani, then
Adam fell. Enter Phill Taylor. As Phill will tell you he is not the most
technically correct batsman Tong have but by God he hits it a long way.
65 runs 6 sixes and 4 fours (running is also not a strong point) Runs
came quickly then but so did wickets 24 balls to go 24 runs needed 3 Wickets
left, 18 runs needed 23 balls left 3 wickets left. 18 runs needed all
out.
A gallant effort came to an abrupt end with some good bowling from P
Lawson.
An old cricketing adage of catches win matches certainly came right today
we dropped and lost.
